How many articles have you seen published about the world’s biggest displacement crisis in Sudan? Or the severe hunger crisis sweeping through the resource-rich Democratic Republic of the Congo? How often do you hear journalists reference the number of people who rely on aid in the Sahel?

When information about these crises doesn’t reach you, it’s easier for global leaders to ignore. And it’s much harder for humanitarian organisations, like the Norwegian Refugee Council, to attract funding to support those in need. As a result, millions of people suffer in silence.

DR Congo: Urgent action needed

Country director Eric Batonon spoke to DW about the crisis in DRC: “It is really important that the international community and all world leaders come together to try to find a solution to these conflicts, and allow millions of women and children to return home and safeguard a safe future for them.”

Sudan: Local response efforts

Advocacy manager Mathilde Vu appeared on Al Jazeera, explaining what is currently happening in Sudan. “The reason why people are surviving is because we have local volunteers, Sudanese, who are on the ground, on the frontline, risking their lives to save their peers.”

Global: Alarming drop in global funding

Halfway into 2024, only 18 percent of the funding needed for humanitarian assistance globally has been received. Our press release on the subject was picked up by, among others, Europa Press, Infobae, La Nación, and All Africa.

      


Each year, the Norwegian Refugee Council publish a list of the ten most neglected and forgotten displacement crises in the world.

The purpose is to focus on the plight of people whose suffering rarely makes international headlines, who receive no or inadequate assistance, and who never become the centre of attention for international diplomacy efforts:
